PL+S starts on a high
The first day of Prolight + Sound kicked off to a sunny start with several first-time exhibitors and some manufacturers returning to the show after a long hiatus, not to mention a heavy sprinkle of product launches.
With both Prolight + Sound and Musikmesse being held concurrently this year for the first time and audio sections being more closely grouped together, there was a level of uncertainty in the air on how that would pan out but views from exhibitors were largely positive across both the lighting and audio segments – with the audio halls really building up in the afternoon and seeing much higher traffic than the morning.
First timers to the show included Calibre, unveiling their smart LED wall – SmartBrick, designed for retail and digital signage applications, as well as the QuadVision HDMI 4K Scaler-Switcher with multiviewer and matrix output modes. Holoplot were also new to the show this year debuting their Orion technology, and the likes of Unilumin, Meyer Sound and Merging, all returning to the show after a sabbatical.
Highlights of the first day included Funktion-One’s international debut of its ‘compact footprint’ Vero VX System which has been three years in the making. Unveiling the Vero VX, Funktion-One founder Tony Andrews said: ‘We’re delighted to introduce Vero VX to the world. Since Vero’s launch in 2016, we’ve had a lot of interest in a smaller system that offers the same performance characteristics and ease of deployment. Through significant engineering innovation, we’ve managed to achieve that objective.’
The Vero VX system comprises VX90 full-range vertical array elements, V124 or V221 bass enclosures, amp racks, fly bars, transport dollies, ground stack hardware, cabling and projection predictive software.
The afternoon also saw Adamson announce its latest additions to the S-Series of compact loudspeakers, including the S7 two-way, full range line array enclosure and matching S118 subwoofer, as well as the S7p and S10p two-way, point-source cabinets. While KV2 Audio surprised attendees at PL+S 2019 with a global launch of its most compact loudspeaker yet – the ESD Cube, a passive 5-inch loudspeaker that uses a unique trans-coil design for improved vocal reproduction, extended high frequency response and increased dynamic range as well as lower distortion.
DiGiCo was also back at the event with some true showman antics, this time launching Mustard for Quantum 7 under The Greatest Showman theme. While Powersoft took to the stage with its X4L, a four-channel amplifier platform, Loto advanced processing board specifically designed to provide advanced DSP functions to any powered product and DSPLite ETH.
Arguably, the MesseFrankfurt might still be too large and expansive a venue for the event it is today but with several newcomers and some returning exhibitors to the show, it may well prove to need that extra space.
