South Africa:

Equipment from Meyer Sound, DPA, Audio-Technica and Midas combined to power the recent South African run of West Side Story at the Nelson Mandela at Joburg Theatre. The sound design for the production came from Prosound technical director, Mark Malherbe, while Eastern Acoustics acted as the hardware supplier.

At the start of the signal chain, a combination of DPA and Audio-Technica microphones were used for the production. DPA d:screet 4061 headset microphones were used for the actors on stage with the manufacturer’s 4099s called into action in the orchestra pit. Audio-Technica ATM350 microphones were also liberally deployed in the pit to mic the 32-person strong orchestra.

Eastern Acoustics sub hired the consoles from Splitbeam for the show. The production called on Midas Pro 1 and Pro 9 desks which were piloted by Cara Dowling.

Completing the signal chain were speakers and processing from Meyer Sound. The manufacturer’s M1D line array elements were deployed around the theatre. The main hangs comprised eight of the cabinets per side, while front-fills and side fills accounted for a further 24. Completing the rig were CQ1 and CQ2 speakers as centre-fill while processing was via the manufacturer’s Galileo loudspeaker management system.
